Professional Experience
Chemical ecology research of the Florida rosemary grasshopper with Dr. Hojun Song and Dr. James Harper at UCF. Presentations of chemical ecology work at Entomological Society of America (ESA) national conferences in 2013 and 2014 along with the regional Southeastern Ecology and Evolution Conferences (SEEC) in 2013 and 2014.
Research Interests
Primary interest is of chemical ecology. My previous work investigated a light-sensitive plant metabolite in a nocturnal grasshopper using natural product isolation and High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry techniques. I now will apply these skills to investigate Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emitted from cotton plants inoculated with fungal endophytes using Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry. Data from food choice experiments with some Hemipteran bugs on cotton suggest that VOCs may be responsible for deterring the pests. During my time in the Sword Lab, I plan to detect and identify these VOCs and determine if they are of fungal or plant origin.
